New Washington Post AI tool sifts massive data sets
Haystacker Allows Journalists to Sift Through Large Data Sets to Find Newsworthy Trends or Patterns
The Washington Post on Sunday published its first-ever story built on the work of a new AI tool called Haystacker that allows journalists to sift through large data sets — video, photo or text — to find newsworthy trends or patterns.
Why it matters: In an interview, the Post’s chief technology officer Vineet Khosla said the company is committed to building many AI tools in-house because they can address the specific needs of trained journalists.
“It’s a far superior product than just the general purpose stuff you get from Big Tech,” he said.

NYT plans to debut new generative AI ad tool later this year
It Plans to Make the New Tool Widely Available to Marketers in the Second Half of The Year
“This obviously demonstrates that we believe GenAI is an enabler and can be something that is effective for our business when used responsibly,” said Joy Robins, global chief advertising officer.
The new technology, which is being created internally at the Times, will deliver a recommendation for where an ad campaign could perform best based on its message or objectives. The tool can also be used to target niche audiences that were previously unidentifiable based on their interests, aspirations and opinions. For example, a car company looking to position itself as family-friendly might use the tool to align some of its messages with articles about technology and others to pet owners across the Times’ site and app.

Microsoft is Teaming Up with Semafor on AI-Assisted News Stories
‘Signals’ Will be Written Entirely by Journalists with Microsoft’s Chatbot Acting as a Research Tool
Microsoft is teaming up with media website Semafor on a new project that uses ChatGPT to aid in the creation of news stories, The Financial Times has reported. It’s one of several journalistic collaborations Microsoft is set to announce today, and follows a New York Times lawsuit filed against the software giant and its partner, OpenAI, for copyright infringement.
Semafor, co-founded by former Buzzfeed editor-in-chief Ben Smith, will create a feed called “Signals” that will be sponsored by Microsoft for an undisclosed but “substantial” sum, the report states. It will highlight breaking news and analysis, offering a dozen or so posts per day. All stories will be written entirely by journalists, with the AI effectively acting as a research tool.
